Interior architects in France: role, fees and how they differ from architects

An interior architect reorganises and transforms existing spaces. In France the title is not regulated, they cannot sign every building permit, and fees are calculated in several ways.

What an interior architect does

An interior architect (architecte d'intérieur) designs how spaces are laid out: moving rooms around, kitchens and bathrooms, built-in storage, lighting, materials and furniture. They can also ask builders for quotes and supervise the works. They mostly work on existing homes, offices, shops and restaurants.

A title that is not regulated

Unlike "architecte", the title "architecte d'intérieur" is not protected by French law. The government confirmed this in 2025 and 2026, mentioning that a specific title might be created once training courses are harmonised.

The Conseil français des architectes d'intérieur (CFAI), which took over from the OPQAI, certifies professionals who apply: they may then call themselves "architecte d'intérieur CFAI". It also recognises around twenty five-year degree courses. Its directory is on cfai.fr.

Can they file a building permit?

As they are not architects within the meaning of the 1977 law, interior architects cannot sign the design of a building permit where an architect is compulsory: above 150 m² of floor area, or for a company. They can, however, prepare a prior declaration, or a permit for an individual below that threshold, like any professional. Purely interior works generally need no planning authorisation, unless they create more than 5 m² of floor area (attic conversion, mezzanine), which needs a prior declaration, or are in an area covered by a conservation plan (plan de sauvegarde).

How much does an interior architect cost?

Fees are free. The trade's pricing guides quote in 2026:

MethodUsual range (excl. VAT)
Percentage of the works, with site supervision7–15%
Price per m², design only€40–150 per m²
Hourly rate (advice, visits)€70–200 per hour

The fee calculator gives an estimate for an interior fit-out.

Architect, interior architect, decorator

  • An architect is registered with the Ordre, designs buildings and extensions and is the only one who can sign a permit where an architect is compulsory.
  • An interior architect transforms interior volumes, can alter partitions or openings with an engineer's help, and often supervises the works, under their own insurance.
  • A decorator works mostly on colours, fabrics, furniture and lighting, without touching the structure.
Key points

To refit an interior, an interior architect is often enough. Once a building permit is needed and the total floor area exceeds 150 m², or the project is carried out by a company, you need an architect registered with the Ordre.

Frequently asked questions

Is the title of interior architect protected in France?

No. Only the title of architect is protected by law. The CFAI certifies interior architects who apply, who may then call themselves 'architecte d'intérieur CFAI'.

How much does an interior architect cost in France?

Pricing guides usually quote 7–15% of the cost of the works excluding VAT with site supervision, €40–150 excluding VAT per m² for design only, or €70–200 excluding VAT per hour.

Can an interior architect sign a building permit?

Not where an architect is compulsory, that is above 150 m² of floor area or for a company. Below that, they can prepare the application like any professional.
